Yantra symbol and meanings

http://www.yogabound.com/anahata-anahatha-4th-chakra-unbeaten-or-heart-chakra/

The yantra symbol for Anahata is two triangles, one right side up and one up side down. The heart chakra is in the middle; it is the balance, so there are three chakras above and three below. These triangles also represent the balance between masculine and feminine energy.

The twelve petals on the outside of represent twelve different vrittis, kam, kham, gam, gham, ngam, cham, chham, jam, jham, nyam, tam and tham in Sanskrit. They mean lust, feaud, indecision, repentance, hope, anxiety, longing, impartiality, arrogance, incompetence, discrimination, and defiance.

http://theresaann.hubpages.com/
Characteristics
The characteristics of Anahata include divine/unconditional love, forgiveness, compassion, understanding, balance, group consciousness, oneness with life, acceptance, peace, openness, harmony, and contentment. It is also associated with charity and psychic healing.

Energy Focus
The heart chakra is located in the central cavity between the two lungs and between the spine and heart. This area is also referred to as the heart center. It is here that selfish, personal emotion is translated into devotion and compassion for others. The second psychic knot, or center for emotional attachment is also located in the heart chakra.

Function
The function of Anahata is anchor people from their higher selves. Anahata, as it is the middle chakra, provides the link between the lower chakras, the earthy-er chakras, and the upper chakras, the more divine chakras. Anahata provides the body and the blood with energy and the drive to live. It is also partly responsible for blood circulation.

Effects of a balanced chakra

A balanced or open chakra has several different attributes. Relieving tension or stress in the heart chakra can lead one to be compassionate, willing to share and give of ourselves, hopeful, inspired, warm, kind, tender hearted, and trusting. It can also allow us to give, receive, and experience love and a sense of wholeness or completion. People with an open heart chakra also tend to forgive a lot more more, accept a lot more, and feel contentment in their lives.

Here is some soothing music to help balance the heart chakra:

Asanas

The best way to open the heart chakra is to open our hearts to love. If we release fear and judgement, and we learn to love and accept those around us and ourselves, the chakra will open and we will feel much healthier and stronger. However, there are several different asanas, or yoga poses, we can do to help further open this chakra.

An example is Gomukhasana, or Cow Face Pose. Gomukhasana is a sitting pose that can be achieved by sitting in Dandasana, Staff Pose, to begin. Then you want to bend your knees so your feet are on the ground. The next step would be to lay your legs flat on the ground so that they are still bent, but parallel to the ground. Then you would cross your right knee over your left with the knees in line. To achieve the arm position, you would reach your right arm straight out and rotate it towards the front of the room until your palm faces the ceiling. Then you would lift your arm straight up then lower your forearm into the space between your shoulder blades, parallel to the sides of the waist. With your left arm, you would reach it behind your back until you can grasp the fingers of your right arm. You should remain in this pose for about a minute before switching to the other side. This pose is a heart opener because the arms are stretching backwards as the chest pushes forward.

Another yoga pose that helps to open up Anahata is Garudasana or Eagle Pose, which is a standing pose. This pose starts in Tadasana. Then you want to bend your knees and lift your left left, crossing it over your right, which is balancing on the ground. Your left foot should snake around your right calf so your toes are visible from the front of your body. Next, for the arms, you want to reach your arms straight out and allow your shoulder blades to spread out as far as possible in your back. Then you want to bend your elbows and lift your right one onto your left elbow with your arms parallel to the sides of your waist. Your right hand should be in a higher elevation than your left. The palms of both hands should be pressing towards each other as you lift both elbows towards the ceiling. Remain in this position anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds, then release your arms and legs, stand in Tadasana, and repeat on the other side. This pose is heart opener because it stretches the shoulders.

Ustrasana, Camel Pose, is a chest opener as well. To maneuver into this pose, start in a kneeling position, with your thighs perpendicular to the floor and your calves parallel to the sides of the (yoga) mat with the tops of the feet touching the top of the mat. Next you want to press your shins and tops of your feet firmly into the earth and imagine raising your sitting bones further up your back. Then you would place your hands at the base of your back with your finger tips reaching towards the ground to lengthen your lower back. To go into the full posture, lean back and reach your hands to the bottoms of your feet and hold for up to a minute. The thighs should be active and remain perpendicular to the ground. The head can drop back a bit, but the chest should remain lifted without the hips puffing forward. The shoulder blades should be down and into the spine. This pose is a heart opener, obviously, because by reaching your arms backwards with your chest up, you are stretching and opening the heart.

Gemstones & Essential Oils

Gemstones
Different gemstones can be used to help balance and regulate energy in the body. The type of gem that works with a certain chakra depends on the composition and vibration of the gemstones. Green and pink tourmaline are important gemstones to the heart chakra because they help connect us to our Higher Selves. Green aventurine helps us develop our creativity and relieve tension. Finally, rose quartz helps sooth any emotional stress or pain we might be experiencing, such as subduing grief. Below is a picture of green and pink tourmaline.

Essential Oils
In addition to gemstones, essential oils can help to balance the chakras. For Anahata, these include geranium, rose, and bergamot. This is a picture of some rose essential oil. Burning them helps to release the soothing effects.

Ruling Planet & Deites

http://www.tantra-kundalini.com/anahata.htm
The ruling deity of Anahata is Ishana Rudra Shiva. His skin is a deep blue color, and he has two arms. His hair is flowing with the river Ganga and emanates the knowledge that "I am that." Ishana is a peaceful, beneficiant deity whose passions--in the form of snakes--are tamed at his side. In his right hand is a trident, a damaru drum in his left.

http://www.solarsystemquick.com/order_of_planets.htm
The ruling planet of Anahata is Venus. It corresponds to the "heart." The heart chakra is in the middle of the other six chakras and is related to giving love without asking for anything in return. Venus the planet is often thought of as the feminine or loving planet.
